Nico Rosberg of Mercedes will clinch his first Formula One world title with two races to spare if he wins Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix and team-mate Lewis Hamilton finishes no better than 10th.
Rosberg tops the standings on 331 points from 18 races so far with Hamilton trailing on 305. A win is worth 25 points and the points from second to 10th place are distributed in the following way: 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1. If Rosberg wins in Mexico and Hamilton finishes outside the points, the German driver will hold an unassailable 51-point lead with two races remaining.
If Rosberg wins and Hamilton finishes 10th, he will also clinch the championship. This is because while Hamilton could make up a deficit of exactly 50 points in the remaining races, Rosberg would be guaranteed to complete the season with more wins - the tie-breaker in the event of two or more drivers finishing level on points.
