TurkStat: Moviegoer numbers up, theater audiences down

According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), the number of moviegoers across Turkey has reached more than 55 million in a 22.9 percent increase from last year. On the other hand however, the number of theatergoers in the 2013-2014 season declined by 2.7 percent to around 6 million when compared with the same period. Throughout Turkey, the number of movie theaters in the last five years has increased by 18.3 percent. The number of moviegoers in the last five years increased 54.7 percent. While the number of moviegoers watching Turkish films increased by 72.2 percent, the number of moviegoers watching foreign films increased by 37.1 percent. The TurkStat data also shows that the number of movies shown in theaters in the last five years increased by 15.3 percent. The rate of increase in Turkish movies shown in this period was 31.9 percent, while the rate of increase in foreign movies was 6.1 percent.
In the last five seasons, the number of theater halls has increased by 42.1 percent and the number of seats have also increased 69.6 percent. While the number of theater halls in the 2013-2014 season compared to the previous season increased 9.9 percent, the number of seats in the theater halls have increased by 5 percent. In a comparison with the previous season, the number of theatrical productions staged in the 2013-2014 season increased 6.8 percent to around 6,000. The number of theatergoers in the 2013-2014 season decreased 2.7 percent to around 6 million compared to the 2012-2013 season. Across Turkey, the number of performances staged in theater halls increased 13.8 percent in the last five years. In this period, while the number of local performances increased by 22.3 percent, the number of foreign performances decreased by 11.2 percent. The number of performances staged in theater halls increased by 1.8 percent to around 28,000 in the 2013-2014 season compared to the previous season.
