Turkish teams competing in the second tier of European club basketball made history on Friday as all four teams managed to eliminate their opponents in Euro Cup Women quarter finals and advanced to semifinals, guaranteeing the cup for Turkey early on.
2009 champions Galatasaray were the first ones to secure their ticket to the semifinals by beating Slovakia's Good Angels Kosice by 82-66, managing to overturn an 11-point gap, right before their fans in Istanbul.
Already ahead with a 12-point advantage from the first game, Hatay BŞB from southern Turkey knocked out Poland's Wisla Krakow in a 77-76 home win.
Originated in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus but based in Istanbul, Yakın Doğu University (YDU), which also lead Turkish Women's Basketball League this season, eliminated Entente Sportive Basket Villeneuve d'Ascq Lille Metropole (ESBVA-LM) in a 71-63 victory, after a close 67-68 win in France.
Another French representative, Basket Lattes Montpellier Agglomeration (BLMA), was knocked out comfortably by last-year's semi-finalist Bellona Abdullah Gül University (AGU) of central Kayseri province in a 73-68 win, but mostly finished the job with 20-points aggregate in France.
In the semifinals on March 21 and 24, the two Istanbul teams YDU and Galatasaray will face each other, while Bellona AGU will play against Hatay BŞB.
