The unemployment rate continues to offer a source of hope. The deseasonalized unemployment figure dropped under the nine percentile for the first time in seven years.
According to figures from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUİK), Turkey's deseasonalized unemployment figures experienced a drop of 0.3 percent over the last period, bringing the unemployment figure down to 8.9 percent. The total unemployment rate for January regressed to 10.2 percent, which is a 1.7 percent drop compared to figures from the same month the previous year. Unemployment throughout Turkey decreased by 380,000 people compared to figures from the year prior bringing the total number of unemployed down to 2,664,000. The number of employed increased by 1,014,000 people in January, bringing the total number of employed up to 23,475,000. During this same period, the number of people employed in the agricultural sector increased by 15,000 while in all other sectors, unemployment increased by a total 999,000.
AN INCREASE IN YOUTH EMPLOYMENT
The improvement in the unemployment figure is also evident amongst the younger population. The unemployment rate for the youth population dropped by 3.6 percent compared to figures from the year prior, bringing the total to 18.4 percent. Last year, during the same time period, the unemployment rate amongst the younger population was up to 22 percent. The urban unemployment rate dropped by 1.8 percent down to 12 percent total, while the rural unemployment rate dropped by 1.6 percent bringing the figure down to 6.5 percent. The employment participation rate throughout Turkey increased from 48.1 percent to 48.2 percent. According to January's labor force figures from the Turkish Statistical Institute, 23.1 percent were employed in the agricultural sector, 20 percent in the industrial sector, 6.1 percent were in construction and 50.9 percent of employment came from the service industry.
NON-AGRICULTURAL UNEMPLOYMENT AT 12.4 PERCENT
The non-agricultural unemployment rate regressed from 14.7 to 12.4 percent in the same period. Turkey's Union of Agricultural Chambers Chairman Şemsi Bayraktar explains that even in January, which is the time period where agricultural activities are at their lowest, the sector managed to create 5.4 million employment opportunities, bringing the unemployment rate down by 2.2 percent.
