Environment and Urban Planning Minister İdris Güllüce spoke about the practice of residential buildings annotated to families, and said that the practice prevents the property-owning spouse from selling or hypothecating real estate without the consent of the other spouse, which provides legal protection for them. He added that the practice is valid as long as the marriage remains valid. Emphasizing that 11,612 residential buildings were annotated by families across Turkey in 2014, Güllüce said, "Family annotation drew the most interest in Istanbul, as 3,007 residential buildings in Istanbul, 1,462 in Ankara and 870 in İzmir were annotated by families last year." Güllüce added that only one residential building in Ardahan and Bitlis were annotated by families, however. "The practice didn't draw much attention in the eastern cities.
