General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ) General Manager Hüseyin Yıldırım announced a regional planes project that will have a passenger capacity of 30 to 35 people and function similarly to minibuses in Turkey, for example, by taking off at any time once 30 to 35 passengers are onboard.
He said there are a few reasons behind the delay observed in the implementation of the regional planes, one of them being passengers often dislike prop planes. Yıldırım added that he is an aviation expert and can assure the public that prop planes provide the highest safety and security. He further underscored that in order for regional flights to be successfully implemented, the passenger capacities of planes should be low.
"It is ideal for regional planes to have a passenger capacity of 30 to 35 people, as larger-capacity planes would not be economically advantageous," Yıldırım said. He stressed that if planes serve in a capacity similar to minibuses, taking off whenever they reach the required capacity, then the cost of flying will decrease enormously and many people will not have to reach airports in major cities such as Istanbul and Ankara.
Emphasizing the regional planes will have two alternative engines depending on the frame of the plane, turbo motors with propellers or jet engines, he said: "We had to include jet motors as a result of the dislike of our citizens toward prop planes. However, the only difference between prop planes and planes with jet engines is speed. While in long-haul flights, planes with jet engines are more advantageous while for distances within Turkey between 300 kilometers and 600 kilometers, prop planes are more suitable and economic."
He said ticket prices will decrease by half once the flights of regional airplanes begin. However, what is more important is the acceptance and willingness of the passengers to prefer such planes.
