Çavuşoğlu: Turkey, US should closely collaborate for Gülen's extradition

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu stated that the U.S. and Turkey should be in close cooperation regarding Gülen's extradition. Speaking in a televised interview on Friday, Çavuşoğlu said that the U.S. proposed the establishment of a commission for Gülen's extradition and that Turkey is ready to participate. Moreover, Çavuşoğlu expressed that Gülen should not be allowed to depart from the U.S. before the inquiry into possible extradition has been finalized. "We want to bring the head of the Gülenist terrorist organization back to Turkey. The U.S. should not allow this criminal to stay within their borders. We are providing the necessary paperwork for Gülen's extradition. There should be active cooperation in order to have concrete results. We will continue to pursue this process," he said. Çavuşoğlu also added that the extradition would not take years but could be accomplished in a short period of time.

Affirming that military personnel who sought political asylum in Greece should be deported, Çavuşoğlu said that anti-Turkish groups are trying to coerce the Greek courts. However, in reference to the eight soldiers he added, "They cannot be considered political asylum seekers. We expect the Greek authorities to cooperate with us and deport these traitors to Turkey."

Remarking that there is an increasing anti-U.S. sentiment in Turkey, Çavuşoğlu said the Turkish government is working to counter this trend and added that this negative attitude would benefit neither Turkey nor the U.S. However, he also underlined that mutual cooperation is required from both sides, saying, "But when we are in a position that is fair and right, we have to criticize the criticism being raised. The U.S. and the West are making a mistake, saying, ‘We can criticize Turkey and all other countries.' But, if you are doing something wrong then we will criticize that as well. One should benefit from constructive criticism. We would never accept malicious criticism. We also have the right to criticize."

Stating that some Western media outlets express regret that the coup failed, Çavuşoğlu said, "There are those who insult the Turkish nation by bringing various documents to the forefront. They are sorry that the coup attempt failed. And they are jealous of the keen insight of the Turkish nation. We saw once more that the Turkish nation is a great one and there are also those who say that we are lucky to represent such a nation." He continued to say that "We want to bring the ringleader of FETÖ to Turkey. What we require from the U.S. is quite plain and simple. We need to see the results of our cooperation and are hoping to reach a successful conclusion. [U.S. officials] are supposed to prevent this network's ringleader, who led this failed coup, from running away. They have to take due precautions."
