Italian media poked fun at US Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday after he botched an attempt to praise the Milan EXPO world fair in the local language and came dangerously close to foul language.
In a video posted by the La Repubblica newspaper, the US top diplomat began a speech on nutrition and climate change with a few words in Italian, praising the EXPO fair for its June success in preparing the world's longest pizza, measuring 1.6 kilometers.
"Che mera ... che merdaviglia," Kerry said, in an unfortunate mix of the Italian words meaning "wonderful" and "shit".
Kerry arrived in the northern Italian city for the start of a four-day European tour that includes stops in Paris and Madrid.
