Speaking on Tuesday about World AIDS Day, a senior official from the Health Ministry said HIV infections in Turkey have seen a significant rise in recent years.
Selmur Topal, head of the Ministry's Infectious Diseases department, said although deaths from AIDS dropped in the past decade, HIV cases in age groups between 15-19 and 20-24 saw an increase.
According to Health Ministry figures, more than 11,000 HIV / AIDS cases were reported in the country between 1985 and 2015. The large majority of the infected are men, and more than half of the infections were contracted during sexual intercourse.
