Security forces on Tuesday killed two PKK terrorists in dawn raids to catch terrorists who attacked a police vehicle in Istanbul's Bayrampaşa district on December 1.
The counter-terrorism unit of Istanbul Police launched dawn raids at 2:30 am in Gaziosmanpaşa district, where the terrorists reportedly resided.
Terrorists opened fire on police when they entered the building, which injured four police officers.
The clashes reportedly took place half an hour and two terrorists were killed by the police.
Terrorists were identified as Yeliz Erbay and Şirin Öter, who were said to be the names behind the Star Media bombing attempt on July 24.
Ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and the police officers are reportedly in good condition.
Renewed violence in Turkey has come in the wake of the July 20 Suruç bombing which was allegedly carried out by Daesh and left dozens of people dead. The subsequent PKK-linked murder of two Turkish police officers at their home sparked a new wave of conflict in the country.
The Turkish government has intensified its counterterror operations following the recent attacks carried out by the PKK, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the U.S., the EU and Turkey.
Formed in 1978, the terrorist group has been fighting the Turkish government for an independent state until the early 2000's. The group then shifted its goal to autonomy in predominately Kurdish inhabited regions of Turkey.
