The National Education Ministry (MEB) has dismissed 58 textbook authors on the grounds of being affiliated with the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ). The ministry previously decided on the curriculum and the textbooks of elementary, middle and high schools were finalized in July for the students' use during the new academic year.
However, the ministry decided to look over the textbooks after the attempted coup that took place on July 15. Through delegated legislations that have entered into force since the start of the state of emergency, roughly 28,000 National Education personnel, including textbook authors have been discharged. After the dismissal of the authors, the ministry decided to review the textbooks once again. Textbooks penned by FETÖ members will be sent for recycling if the authorities consider it necessary.
Following the review, the books will be rewritten by new authors. The ministry books are planned to be distributed to 16 million students studying in elementary, middle and high schools. Nearly 250 million textbooks will be prepared from scratch and they will be ready for the new academic year on Sept. 19. The ministry distributed 236,286,325 free textbooks to students the previous year. The total cost of the textbooks to the ministry was TL 394 million ($110 million).
