At a panel held in Batman province on Monday, pro-Kurdish Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Co-Chair Kamuran Yüksek explicitly called on people to use illegal electricity and said that autonomy will be the inevitable system in the region sooner or later.
Yüksek spoke at the panel with the slogan "All together towards autonomy," defying Ankara and reiterating the request of his party and the HDP. He came under fire for his words regarding the use of electricity in the region. Claiming the region generates 80 percent of the country's electricity supply, Yüksek speculated that the government disproportionately distributes electricity and often leaves the southeast in the dark, a grievance he uses to justify calling for people to use illegal electricity.
Even though Yüksek urges people to use electricity illegally from now on, Turkey already is one of the worst countries in the world in terms of illegal electricity usage, as 15.4 per cent of Turks use electricity illegally, and the southeastern Anatolian region, where Batman province is located, topped the list among seven regions in Turkey at 75 percent.
Meanwhile, Batman Mayor Sabri Özdemir and HDP provincial head Abdulbari Karaağaç attended the panel as well. The DBP is known to be the local affiliate of the HDP.
