The Central Executive Committee (MYK) of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) has decided to prepare its own constitution proposal by April. Since the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) decided to leave the constitution conciliation commission, the AK Party has focused on preparing its own constitution proposal, and this was the main topic discussed at a MYK meeting on Friday that lasted nine hours. According to sources in AK Party headquarters, MYK members decided to prepare their constitution proposal by April. The proposal, which will be worked on during the next MYK meeting in mid-April, should be submitted to Parliament in May or at the latest by the beginning of June.
According to current legislation, the new constitution proposal has to be accepted in Parliament with 330 votes. The AK Party has 316 deputies and at least 14 more votes will be required to pass the proposal onto a referendum. Therefore, the AK Party aims to attract support from the opposition parties for their constitution proposal. The MYK has decided to continue conciliation efforts with other parties, especially with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).
The removal of parliamentary immunity for five deputies from the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) was discussed during the MYK meeting. Last week, Parliament received an official appeal that seeks to lift the immunity of the co-chairs of the opposition HDP, along with that of three other deputies. The motion should be discussed in Parliament on March 22.
