Iraqi forces on Tuesday have retaken a large part of Ramadi city from Daesh terrorists, officials have said.
Iraqi security forces on Tuesday recaptured a large area on the southwestern side of Ramadi, a provincial capital west of Baghdad, from the Daesh terrorists, which overran the city in May, officials said.
Retaking the Al-Tameem area from Daesh is a significant victory for Iraqi forces, who have been fighting for months to secure territory around Ramadi, a major city west of Baghdad and the capital of the vast Anbar province.
The retaking of the area on Tuesday comes just over a week after Iraqi forces announced the capture of the Palestine Bridge, completing the encirclement of the city.
Daesh captured Ramadi in May, dealing the biggest blow to Iraqi forces since the fall of Mosul nearly a year before. The government soon announced a counter-offensive, but progress has been sluggish.
Officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to brief to the press.
