Turkey on Thursday recalled its ambassador to Luxembourg for consultation after Luxembourg passed a bill labeling killings of Armenians during World War I as "genocide" on Wednesday.
Turkish Foreign Ministry released a statement on Wednesday, saying: "We condemn the Luxembourg Parliament's decision taken by disrupting the historical facts and law, and strongly reject it."
The statement said, the decision shows that Luxembourg is very far from understanding the 1948-dated UN Agreement it addresses to, and commits the same error with some of its role model parliaments.
"If Parliaments put themselves in the place of international courts and try to render judgments on such a serious crime such as genocide, they would abuse history and law." The statement read.
Turkey will continue to commemorate its painful memories of common history with the Armenians in an honorable and mutual respect, according to the statement.
"Turkey's Luxembourg Ambassador Leven Şahinkaya has been recalled back to Ankara for consultation," the statement further indicated.
Turkey and Armenia disagree on what happened during the events between 1915 and 1923, with Armenia saying that 1.5 million people were deliberately killed and Turkey saying the deaths were a result of deportations and civil strife.
The 1915 events took place during World War I when a portion of the Armenian population living in the Ottoman Empire sided with the invading Russians and revolted against the empire.
The Ottoman Empire relocated Armenians in eastern Anatolia following the revolts and there were Armenian casualties during the relocation process.
Armenia has demanded an apology and compensation, while Turkey has officially refuted Armenian allegations over the incidents saying that, although Armenians died during the relocations, many Turks also lost their lives in attacks carried out by Armenian gangs in Anatolia.
