Despite a rocky and a busy diplomatic agenda during 2015, the Foreign Ministry has announced its agenda for the new year with significant international events. Speaking to the media in the last press briefing of 2015, ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgiç said that events in the first six months of 2016 will begin with the eighth annual ambassadors' conference under the theme of "Crisis Management and Humanitarian Solutions" from Jan. 11-16 in Ankara and Gaziantep under the chairmanship of Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. As the ambassadors' conference holds a great significance due to its theme, the Foreign Ministry also announced that on May 23-24 Istanbul will also host the World Humanitarian Summit (WHS), which is the first global summit on humanitarian action of this size and scope.
The ambassadors' conference will begin on Monday Jan. 11 with a visit to Anıtkabir – Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's mausoleum – and then a visit to the Foreign Ministry cemetery, which is designated for those who served at the ministry and lost their lives – mostly during the 1980s at the hands of the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) militant group.
Turkey holds the term presidency for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and will host its 13th Leaders' Summit under the chairmanship of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan from April 10 to April 15 in Istanbul. The 31st meeting of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization (COMCEC) of the OIC was organized in the Istanbul Congress Center from Nov. 23-26 with Erdoğan at its opening session.
Additionally, the World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) will take place in Istanbul on May 23-24 with the goal of bringing the global community together to commit to new ways of working together to save lives and reduce hardship around the globe.
While Antalya successfully hosted the G-20 summit in 2015 from May 27 to May 29, the follow-up meeting of the Program of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2011-2020 will be held in Antalya. Furthermore, the Botanical EXPO 2016 will be held for the first time next year in Antalya on April 23. It has been described as the largest cultural, historical and educational Olympiad in the world.
