German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that Turkey is a key partner for Germany in the solution of the migrant issue and admitted his country failed to show a strong enough reaction against the failed July 15 coup attempt in Turkey, during his speech in German Federal Parliament on Wednesday.
He underscored the importance of cooperation with Turkey regarding the migrant issue and said that whoever wants peace needs Turkey, by saying, "Anyone who wants to say something about a solution in Syria, Iraq and Libya should know that none of these conflicts can be solved without Turkey."
Steinmeier said that the Turkish people were not impressed by the way Germany failed to show solidarity with them after the failed coup attempt, carried out by Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ). They also think the attempt was not taken as seriously in Germany as it should have been. He also brought up claims in Germany that said the coup was not real and was orchestrated by the government to gain more power.
"We have failed to clearly declare our stance, which was our unconditional support to democratic intuitions in Turkey and our great respect for the Turkish people in their struggle against the putschists in the cause of defending their democracy," Steinmeier said.
