Friday, via his personal social media account, opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli responded to criticism that his party will likely disappear in Parliament due to the new political system brought by constitutional change, saying, "The MHP as a party will exist forever."
Regarding concerns that the constitutional amendment package foreseeing a new governmental system will likely result in a two-party system, Bahçeli indicated that the MHP was established Feb. 7-8, 1969 and its presence has continued for 48 years.
"The existence of the MHP stands shoulder to shoulder with Turkish nations although it has faced many obstacles over the years. In spite of gossipers and troublemakers propagandizing against the MHP, it will exist forever," Bahçeli said.
On the other hand, Bahçeli offered condolences on his personal social media account for the eight Turkish soldiers killed on Wednesday and Thursday; with three of them mistakenly being killed by Russian fighter jets in al-Bab.
Meanwhile, according to sources in Ankara, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and the MHP leader met on Thursday for 45 minutes and agreed to use the same discourse to explain the constitutional amendment package to the public during the referendum campaign.
In the same meeting, Yıldırım proposed a collaborative referendum rally with Bahçeli and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan participating. Emphasizing the motto to create one nation, one flag, one homeland and one state, the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and the MHP are expected to use the common discourse.
However, Bahçeli did not take kindly to Yıldırım's suggestion and said that each party its own political view and that they should act in accordance with their own characteristic political properties, but using the same discourses could help both parties be consistent.
Yıldırım and Bahçeli also discussed developments regarding Turkey's al-Bab operation. The two shared the same view that achievements in al-Bab could lead to good motivation for Turkey.
