Opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, continuing to support the constitutional amendment package, responded on Tuesday via his personal social media account to those who said he put aside his political principles for the constitutional changes proposing a transition to the presidential system, and stated that he has never changed his opinion in regards to his nationalist stance.
Emphasizing that the MHP's position has not changed, Bahçeli stated that people who criticize him could not see that the MHP leader never changed targets, opinions and ideals. Bahçeli also emphasized that the MHP is open to developing itself and it does not mean that the party is giving up its essential principles.
Emphasizing the importance of the referendum to enact the people's will, Bahçeli also stated that people with no connection to the public questioned the MHP's preferences and that all criticism except for democratic discourse was rejected by the party.
Highlighting the MHP's 48 years of political experiences, Bahçeli added that the party cannot walk with others who do not have the people's support. Bahçeli also emphasized that even the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu agreed to not take the amendment package to the Constitutional Court to hinder the referendum and that, "The highest decision-making authority is the Turkish people and the last word belongs to the nation." Furthermore, the MHP leader also argued that the CHP's decision was the result of the obligation to respect the people's demands.
