Housing sales in Turkey in September totaled 92,483, a 20.1 percent decrease compared to the same month of 2014, according to an announcement by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) on Friday.
While Istanbul had the highest share as usual with 17.3 percent of total housing sales, most were made to Iraqi citizens. Ankara followed with 10.6 percent, totaling 9,810, and İzmir with 5.7 percent, totaling 5,251.
House sales to foreigners totaled 1,768, marking a 4.8 percent decrease in September compared to the same month of 2014. Iraqis bought 359 houses in Turkey in September, followed by 204 by Saudis, Kuwaitis with 160, Russians with 115, and Britons with 109. Istanbul was the leading province for house sales to foreigners with 561, followed by Antalya with 440, Yalova with 126, Bursa with 112, Trabzon with 105 and Muğla with 85.
Mortgaged house sales throughout Turkey totaled 28,684, a 33.5 percent decreased compared to the same month of 2014. Mortgaged house sales amounted to 31 percent of all house sales, with Bilecik claiming the highest share and accounting for 45.7 of all housing sales. The amount of first house sales totaled 43,333 in the same period, an 18.3 percent decrease, while second-time house sales decreased 21.7 percent to 49,150. Additionally, new house sales comprised 46.9 percent of all house sales.
