Joao Cancelo’s return to Barcelona was overshadowed by an administrative mix-up Wednesday, with incomplete registration paperwork forcing the club to cancel his planned presentation at Camp Nou.

The Portuguese full-back had been expected to join his new teammates on the field before Barcelona’s Joan Gamper Trophy match, wearing the No. 2 shirt and receiving a welcome from the home crowd.

Instead, Cancelo was left waiting in the tunnel before turning around and walking back toward the dressing room as the presentation went ahead without him.

Frustrated Cancelo

Barcelona had planned to introduce Cancelo alongside the rest of the squad, but the club was unable to complete the final formalities of his move from Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal.

According to Spanish reports, Al-Hilal and Cancelo had agreed to terminate the remainder of his contract, with the player giving up outstanding wages to facilitate the move. However, the final documents required to complete his transfer to Barcelona had not been processed in time.

That left Cancelo in an awkward position. Despite Barcelona having announced his return, he was not yet fully registered with the club and could not take part in the planned presentation.

Cancelo had already been seen in the tunnel wearing Barcelona’s No. 2 shirt when the plans changed. He then walked away visibly frustrated, while some of his teammates appeared confused by his sudden departure.

In one awkward moment, Lamine Yamal appeared to ask Cancelo what had happened. The defender did not stop and continued toward the dressing room.

Barcelona subsequently removed social media posts related to the presentation as the paperwork issue became apparent.

A homecoming put on hold

The episode was an unfortunate way for Cancelo to mark his return to Barcelona.

The 32-year-old spent time on loan at the Catalan club during the 2023-24 season and returned to Spain on loan for the second half of the previous campaign. His performances made him a popular figure among Barcelona supporters, and his permanent return had been viewed as a significant addition to the squad.

Cancelo is expected to take over as Barcelona’s No. 2 once the transfer is formally completed.

The club now needs to finish the remaining paperwork with Al-Hilal before Cancelo can officially begin the next chapter of his Barcelona career.

Rodri steals the spotlight

While Cancelo’s presentation was scrapped, another major arrival received a huge reception at Camp Nou.

New signing Rodri was given a hero’s welcome from the Barcelona crowd before kickoff after completing his move from Manchester City.

The Spanish midfielder arrives with a major reputation after being named the best player at the 2026 World Cup.

His arrival was one of the biggest talking points surrounding Barcelona’s preparations for the new season.

Cancelo, meanwhile, could soon have his own opportunity to take center stage.

Barcelona are expected to resolve the outstanding paperwork quickly, with Cancelo in line to be available for the club’s La Liga opener against Elche on Aug. 23.
