When approximately 50 demonstrators from the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn Party attempted to cross a police security barrier to enter the Turkish consulate in an attempt to protest a visit by opposition-party MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli, Greek police were forced to intervene, using tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. Security forces took intensive security measures to secure the Turkish consulate during Bahçeli's visit.
While in Thessaloniki, Bahçeli paid a visit to the house where Atatürk was born and also met with representatives from the Thessaloniki Muslim Culture and Education Foundation at the Thessaloniki Consulate. Bahçeli then toured the Yedikule castle and the Thessaloniki port along with Thessaloniki Ambassador Tuğrul Biltekin. Then at around noon yesterday, Bahçeli and his accompanying committee departed for Macedonia.
