Five girls between the ages of 11 and 14 have drowned in an artificial pond late Wednesday in the southeastern Turkish province of Batman. Girls, all cousins, went to the pond in the province's Kozluk district to enjoy a swim. Upon seeing one of them drowning, the others jumped in to the deep water but all lost their lives while trying to rescue the drowning girl. Drowning incidents have increased recently as people seeking relief from the hot weather have sought refuge in the sea, lakes and artificial ponds. Eighteen people have drowned in separate incidents across the country over the past four days.
