Medical personnel across the country will hold a one-day strike today in protest the murder of Kamil Furtun, who was shot last Friday by a person believed to be a relative of a patient who had died.
Furtun, a surgeon at the İlkadım Pulmonary Diseases Hospital in the province of Samsun, died of his injuries the same day. According to figures, 31,767 medical personnel have been assaulted since 2012, with 18,000 of whom are doctors.
One-third of personnel who filed complaints were physically assaulted. Most complaints were filed by personnel working at state hospitals. An interdepartmental system allows personnel to file complaints, which the Health Ministry refers to the police and provides them with legal counsel.
