The Kocaeli Municipality in northwestern Turkey offers books to passengers riding inner-city public buses as a novel way to encourage the public to adopt better reading habits. Small libraries were installed in 200 buses in the city where passengers can pick books during their ride ranging from classic novels to the work of contemporary authors.
Municipalities seek creative ways to get more locals to read to end their tedium on long bus trips. Last year, the Istanbul's Bağcılar municipality introduced bus stop libraries. Bookcases placed at bus stops offer a wide selection of books for passengers waiting for the bus.
