The Justice and Development Party (AK Party) seeks to inspire other political movements with a more environment-friendly election campaign ahead of the Nov. 1 elections. Çiğdem Karaaslan, the party's deputy chair for the environment, said they would use recyclable materials in their campaign in a bid to protect the environment.
Election campaigns in Turkey usually leave a mess behind once they are wrapped up, with streets cluttered with discarded campaign posters.
Karaaslan said they aimed to hold a campaign by not polluting the environment and without noise pollution. Noise is another matter in the politically-charged atmosphere ahead of the polls, with ubiquitous campaign vehicles incessantly broadcasting songs and speeches through distorted loudspeakers roaming the streets every day ahead of the elections.
Karaaslan was speaking in an interview in Samsun, a northern Turkish city, where representatives of political parties agreed upon limiting the hanging of election posters and campaign vehicles with loudspeakers blaring slogans and songs. Similar agreements are implemented in different cities, though a nationwide agreement between the parties to curb pollution related to the election campaign does not yet exist.
