The prison population in Turkey rose more than 10 percent last year according to the latest figures released on Monday. Currently there are 158,690 people in prison in Turkey as the country looks for a solution to the overcrowded prisons.
Figures for 2014 from the state-run Turkish Statistical Agency (TurkStat) shows a clear rise from the previous year and reveals 204 people out of every 100,000 people in the country were incarcerated. The figure is higher than the 163 in 2010, though it is lower than the United States, which is second in the world with 698 people per 100,000, according to a list published by the nonprofit Institute for Criminal Policy Research, after the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean.
