Struggling to contain a campaign of terror by the PKK, Turkey also faces the grim task of compensating victims of terrorism in eastern and southeastern Turkey. The latest figures show the country paid TL 470 million ($16.14 million) to some 30,000 people in the past decade in three cities plagued with terrorism.
Compensation was paid to residents of Van, Bitlis and Muş in the east where terrorists have launched attacks and where supporters of the PKK have vandalized countless properties in riots.
The sum paid covers houses, businesses, cars and lands owned by individuals damaged or demolished in the PKK attacks as well as families who lost their members in attacks or were abducted by the terrorist organization.
Turkey has recently established committees in provincial governorates to determine the damage terrorism caused and make payments to victims applying to the committees, under a law enacted in 2004.
In the eastern city of Van, more than 34,000 people applied for compensation in the past 11 years, and the governorate committee approved 18,201 applications - paying more than TL 300 million.
In the city of Bitlis, 10,179 people were paid more than TL 123 million in the past 11 years for terrorism-related damages, while 1,099 people in Muş received more than TL 23 million.
Apart from direct terror attacks, the committees also ordered the payment of compensation to those who died during two days of riots across Turkey. Supporters of the PKK had started riots on Oct. 6, 2014, under the guise of a protest against DAESH. Dozens of people were killed in the riots, which left hundreds of public buildings, schools, mosques and businesses heavily damaged. More than TL 23 million was paid to those who suffered from the riots.
On Monday, a 16th century mosque in the city of Diyarbakır was burned down by the terrorists, sparking public outrage though it was only one of the large number of historic sites that have been hit by PKK assaults.
