The U.N. peacekeeping contingent serving in the Central African Republic is suspected of sexually abusing street children in the capital city Bangui, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Tuesday. It was the third case of alleged child sexual abuse involving peacekeepers in that country to have surfaced in recent months. The mission has notified the country contributing the troops and it has begun an investigation into the allegations, Dujarric said. "If the allegations are substantiated, this would constitute a grave violation of U.N. principles and code of conduct for U.N. peacekeepers," he added.
