CIA and US special forces collaborate on secret campaign to target ISIS leaders in Syria

The CIA and the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command have launched a secret campaign in Syria to identify and target ISIS militants and/or affiliates deemed as 'high value targets' via armed drones, said U.S. officials. This secret campaign is run separately from the U.S. counter-terrorism units fighting against ISIS, said U.S. officials according to the Washington Post. Although the CIA's role as mastermind has been expanded, the military proportion of the campaign-the strikes- are entirely carried out by the Joint Special Operations Command, the officials added. The CIA Counterterrorism Center works to detect and locate the suspected terrorists who are purely "high value targets", stated the U.S. officials. Despite having different operation centers at Langley and Fort Bragg, the CIA and JSOC work in cohesion-in a way that eliminates any delay in the strikes- they added. They further added that the CIA and the U.S. special operation forces have been involved in the recent successful strikes against senior ISIS members, among which was British militant Junaid Hussain, believed to be the 'social media architect' of ISIS, responsible for inciting attacks in the U.S.Spokesmen for the CIA and U.S. Special Operations Command declined to comment on the details of the program, whereas other officials wanted to remain anonymous. The program has carried out only a handful of strikes so far, said the officials adding that about 2,450 strikes against ISIS in Iraq and Syria have been conducted in the last year. The U.S.' most recent operation targeted ISIS militants in 27 air strikes in August 22's round of daily attacks on the terrorists in Iraq and Syria, had stated the Command Joint Task Force.Twenty-two of the strikes were in Iraq with the greatest concentrations near the cities of Bayji and Mosul, and five near the Syrian cities of Al Hasakah, Al Hawl and Kobani. Turkey and the U.S. signed an agreement on Thursday August 27 which allows the latter to conduct manned and unmanned flights out of the Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey, and for Turkish jets to conduct airstrikes against ISIS. The first joint operation against ISIS was conducted Saturday August 29 in Syria.
