State conservatory supports young people from disadvantaged families

Turkey's first Turkish music conservatory, the Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory (İTÜ TMDK), which is marking its 40th anniversary this year, has initiated a comprehensive and significant social responsibility program titled Art Academy for Everybody. This new project will support the expansion of love for art as well as an academic education in art by introducing it to every segment of society. The project intends to enable a "different world" for children, who are socially and economically disadvantaged, through art and aims to keep children and youngsters away from criminal activities by introducing them to different fields of art. Within the scope of the project, the Traditional Instruments Education Center (GEÇEM) will be founded and new generations will learn and keep Turkish music alive. While there has been collaborations with certain municipalities for the project, İTÜ TMDK will organize music seminars that are expected to draw scores of people. The inauguration of the project as well as the first event of the Art Academy for Everybody will be organized in collaboration with Gaziosmanpaşa Municipality tomorrow at 20:30 p.m. at İTÜ's Maçka Campus with 600 primary school students attending the event. Thanks to a seminar that will take place during the event, students will gain insights into Turkish musical instruments and have a chance to listen to a repertoire of important Turkish compositions. Ali Tüfekçi of İTÜ TMDK will play ney, Assistant Professor A. Serhat Turunç will play tar, academic Mehmet Emin Bitmez will play ud and former TMDK graduate Samet Kölemen will play kemençe.
