The closing date of the exhibition "Painter and Painting: Mehmet Güleryüz Retrospective," which opened at Istanbul Modern on Jan. 8, has been extended to July 26 due to great interest. Displayed at the Temporary Exhibitions Hall, Güleryüz's exhibition has a new addition of his latest work, "Tribute to Titan: Marsyas and Apollo." Moreover, the curator of the exhibition, Levent Çalıkoğlu, and Güleryüz will hold a panel session on July 2 at Istanbul Modern.With his critical and expressionist style, Güleryüz has earned himself a special and privileged place in the art scene in Turkey for over half a century. The artist presents a glimpse of his artistic career, from the 1960s to 2010, which centers on people and the sociopolitical conditions surrounding them though his retrospective exhibition. He uses a critical and ironic language to shed light on the effects of Turkey's sociocultural and political transformations on people with his various pieces, from sculpture to motifs, gravures and stage performances. Nearly 150 works and 200 motifs made by the artist are being displayed at the exhibition. Apart from his motifs and paintings, the exhibition, "Painter and Painting: Mehmet Güleryüz Retrospective," also features the artist's detailed research and examples of the art of sculpture going back to the 1970s. The exhibition, accompanied texts written by the artist, brings his sculptures, motifs, paintings, porcelain and gravures together under the same roof. Istanbul Modern is also presenting a special educational program for school groups parallel to Güleryüz's retrospective exhibition. The program includes the special exhibition tour titled "In Güleryüz's World," during which schoolchildren examine works of art together with museum experts, and "The Studio of Mehmet Güleryüz" program, in which children participate in applied art activities together with the artist.
