Hamlet to be staged in Istanbul by cabaret-punk group

The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts is preparing for a performance by The Tiger Lilies, a British alternative cabaret group, on Oct. 15, 16 and 17. The group will stage ‘Hamlet,' perhaps Shakespeare's most famous play



Thanks to the sponsorship of the Danish Cultural Institute and the Zorlu Performance Center, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) is preparing to host an acclaimed production. The Tiger Lillies, a British cabaret-punk group well known by Turkish music-lovers for its theatrical performances, will be in Istanbul for three nights, performing Shakespeare's famous tragedy "Hamlet," with the group's unique mise-en-scene.The Danish theater group, Theatre Republique, under the guidance of famous director Martin Tulinius and the Tiger Lillies, will take the stage at Zorlu Performing Arts Center Drama Stage on Oct. 15, 16 and 17, with their production "The Tiger Lillies Perform Hamlet." "Hamlet" has been produced many times by different theater groups and directors with various mise-en-scenes. This time, the Tiger Lillies, famous for their music arrangements that mix Roma music and opera, and Theatre Republique will present "Hamlet" with a "grotesque opera" interpretation.Featuring music, modern circus features, puppets and powerful videos, "The Tiger Lillies Perform Hamlet," presents an out-of-the-world theater feast to its audience. "The Tiger Lillies Perform Hamlet" premiered in Denmark in 2012, and before coming to Istanbul, it was staged in Sweden, the U.K., Mexico, Canada, the Netherlands and Switzerland.Tulinius has been awarded the most important theater award in Denmark, the Reumert, four times thanks to his musical and visual compositions. Tulinius has been the director of Theatre Republique since its formation in Copenhagen in 2009. The theater group, with its experienced actors, produces plays by combining modern interpretations of classical theatrical scripts with stage sets, music, costumes, and sound and visual effects reinforced with technology.The Tiger Lillies, formed by Martyn Jacque in 1989, became popular as the creators of alternative cabaret. The group, including Jacque with his impressive voice and accordion, Adrian Huge - described by David Byrne as "the James Joyce of the drums" - and Adrian Stout, have recorded 35 albums. Moreover, with their 2003 album "The Gorey End," they were nominated for a Grammy Award. Co-producing with many artists, the Tiger Lillies prepare shows with artists ranging from circus artists and avant-garde photographers, to experimental dancers, puppeteers and classical music groups. The group was awarded the Olivier Award two times with their musical "Shock Headed Peter."
