Exhibition puts lives of disabled from Sweden and Turkey under spotlight


Bringing portraits and life stories of people with disabilities from Turkey and Sweden, the exhibition "AccessAbility - Erişiyorsam Varım! Istanbul" runs concurrently at Istanbul Technical University's (İTÜ) Taşkışla Campus and TAK Kadıköy until Oct. 31. The exhibition highlights the lives of ordinary people of all ages from Turkey and Sweden living with disabilities in 22 portraits. Through their intimate stories, visitors can start to understand the challenges that they face and their demand to be able to have a full, equal and dignified role in society.Visitors have the chance to see innovative products exclusively designed in Sweden for people with disabilities under the theme "Design for Dignity." Opened on Oct. 10 with the participation of Swedish Consul-General in Istanbul Jens Odlander, the exhibition was organized by the Swedish Institute, Human Rights in Mental Health Initiative (RUSİHAK), Association for Women with Disabilities (ENG-KAD) and the section for Cultural Affairs at the Swedish Consulate. A full program of seminars and workshops will accompany the exhibition.All portraits have audio descriptions and sign language interpreting is available at the seminars. In parallel with the exhibition, a conference is taking place today at the İTÜ building where project stakeholders from Sweden and Turkey, researchers as well as representatives from nongovernmental organizations are expected to attend. The exhibition underlines the importance of the right for equal and dignified life for all while introducing a different perspective on the concept of disability within the framework of U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
