The 56th Venice Biennial International Art Exhibition, which will run from May 13, 2017 to Nov. 26, 2017, will host a Turkish Pavilion that showcases a project by Turkish artist Cevdet Erek. Coordinated by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), the exhibition and its content will be introduced to the public in the coming months.Erek's installations and art performances, which focus on sound, place and rhythm, have been displayed at various art organizations and institutions, such as dOCUMENTA in 2012; the Istanbul Biennale in 2003, 2013 and 2015; the Sidney Biennale in 2016; the Stedelijk Museum in 2014; MAXXI in 2014 and 2015; the Istanbul Modern in 2014, 2015 and 2016; Arter in 2011; and SALT in 2012 and 2015.Among his solo exhibitions, two that stand out are "ALT ÜST," which was exhibited on Spike Island, Bristol in 2014, and "Week," which was displayed in Kunsthalle Basel in 2012. Erek also produced the books "SSS - Sahil Sahnesi Sesi" (The Sound of Beach Stage), which was published by BAS, "Room of Rhythms 1," which was published by Walther König, and "Az Boş Belki" (Less Empty Maybe), which was published by Revolver/Artist. The artist was granted the Nam June Paik Prize presented by the North Rhine-Westphalia Art Foundation for his work "SSS - Sahil Sahnesi Sesi" in 2012.Erek received his bachelor's degree from Mimar Sinan University's Department of Architecture and became popular with his band Nekropsi. He completed his studies in the Sound Engineering and Design Department at İTU's Erol Biçer Music Research Center (MIAM) and was a guest artist at Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. The artist currently lives in Turkey and continues his academic studies at Istanbul Technical University.The 57th Venice Biennial International Art Exhibition's Turkish Pavilion's advisory board consists of artist Ali Kazma, art curator Başak Doğa Temür, the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation, Art Department General Manager Özalp Birol, curator and Istanbul Modern Art consultant Paolo Colombo and Professor Zeynep İnankur of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University.The Turkish Pavilion at the Venice Biennial is under the auspices of the Republic of Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Culture and Arts Ministry and is coordinated by İKSV. The Turkish Pavilion is located at Arsenale, which was rented with support from İKSV and the contributions of 21 benefactors, until 2034.
