The First London Design Biennial, which will be held between Sept. 7 and Sept. 27, will feature a Turkish project titled "The Wish Machine."The details of the project, which was coordinated by the Istanbul Foundation of Culture and Arts (İKSV) and designed by Istanbul-based multi-disciplinary design studio Autoban, were shared at a press conference held in the Marmara Hotel.Speaking at the press conference, İKSV Chairman Bülent Eczacıbaşı said the İKSV has been organizing events at international festivals and biennials since 2004. Eczacıbaşı said: "It is precious for our artists to participate in global platforms and forge permanent and solid relations. London is one of the world's leading cities in design. This biennial is really important to us since it will be a unique and interesting event. A biennial that sees and treats design as a cultural element, just like Istanbul Design Biennial."An interdisciplinary and collective project bringing together different areas of expertise, "The Wish Machine" aims to create a real, interactive and perfectly working mechanical system, custom designed for the space.The collection director, Koray Malhan, one of the curatorial advisers, said they first wanted to go with an idea rather than a design. Stressing that they dreamed of a project that includes the audience and provokes a different feeling in each viewer, Malhan said, "We can take design forward on a universal line. It is something human. It is a design that all countries can relate to. Like a utopia. Its design is one of the reflections of the way the human mind works. I was thinking something really nice would come out, but I wasn't expecting that much. It is a really nice performance for real ideas to be materialized in reality. The process itself brought up the idea of utopia."Autoban Co-Founder Seyhan Özdemir indicated that they had an aim to take known and familiar forms at the center of a story with rich experiences and include the users by using modern language.According to Özdemir, due to the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the publication of Sir Thomas More's classic "Utopia" in 1516, the theme, "Utopia by Design," was chosen, and they tried to create the wish tree metaphor of several cultures by sending a piece of paper on which the audience writes their hopes, ideas of utopia and wishes to an unknown location with an air-operated pneumatic system in a mirrored space.Among the speakers at the meeting were Autoban Co-Founder Sefer Çağlar, one of the curatorial advisers and artist Paul McMillen, architect Zehra Uçar and Istanbul Design Biennial Director Deniz Ova.An interdisciplinary and collective project bringing together different areas of expertise, "The Wish Machine" aims to create a real, interactive and perfectly working mechanical system, custom designed for the space.Displaying projects from over 30 countries, the biennial aims to create a debate, discussion, and cooperation platform and be an ideas lab that can contribute to making the world a better place by bringing together exciting and innovative designers.
