Marbling art spreads in Europe through UNESCO festival

With the efforts of marbling artist Atilla Can and the support of UNESCO, the World Marbling Day events have taken place in various European cities. This year they will be held in Prague with colorful activities

Organized for the fifth time, the World Marbling Day events, which were initiated by marbling (ebru) artist Atilla Can, will take place between Nov. 21 and 27 in Prague, with the participation of tens of marbling artists from 50 countries around the world. Can told Anadolu Agency (AA) that he sent petitions to the United Nations and UNESCO many times in 2009 for the art of marbling to be protected and represented with World Marbling Day. He said that many marbling artists from Turkey as well as abroad supported his project. "Back then, my idea suddenly created a domino effect and marbling artists around the world began sending petitions to UNESCO by including their artworks," Can said. Thanks to Can's initiatives, the art of marbling was taken under protection by unanimous vote as Turkey's 12th intangible cultural value at the ninth International Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage in Paris in 2014. Hence, marbling became the very first art in Turkey listed on UNESCO's World Intangible Cultural Heritage List. However, Can did not wait for UNESCO's decision to initiate World Marbling Day. He organized the first World Marbling Day events in 2012 and continues to hold the organization every September ever since. Can said that he named the organization World Marbling Day because he wants marbling to be celebrated around the world. "My aim was to introduce the art of marbling to a vast geography, cross the borders of Turkey and help the world embrace this as an international art rather than a local art. My primary target is to introduce the art of marbling to millions of people around the world and help this art to assume an international identity. After UNESCO victory, the art of marbling began to live its golden age. People around the world admire marbling and this admiration grows apace."Can recalled that dozens of marbling artists from 10 different countries attended last year's World Marbling Day events and claimed that it is a great success that this year marbling artists from 50 countries will participate to the organization.Stating that four provinces and a district in Turkey plus four countries offered to host this year's events, Can said: "When there is so much offered, it was hard to decide. After my evaluations, the winner of the project became Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic. With its protected historic values, bridges and artists, Prague has always evoked admiration in people. It is a city that even Adolph Hitler spared from his bombs. Prague is located in the heart of Europe. We, marbling artists, will travel to Prague to conquer the heart of Europe."Can informed that the presidency of this year's events will be undertaken by Czech artists Xenia Sulimenko and Sarka Duran and the program will be supported by MSB Events. He further informed that the events will take place at Prague's 109-year-old art center Gallery Lucerna and continued, "Usually, the World Marbling Day takes place in September, but because the Islamic feast Qurban Bayram (Feast of the Sacrifice) is also in September, we decided to move the events to November. Moreover, we will also celebrate the second anniversary of our UNESCO victory in November as well."
