Calligraphers worldwide meet in Istanbul

Istanbul's Küçükçekmece district is currently hosting an international event that brings together artists engaged in the art of calligraphy from around the world

The "International Calligraphy Exhibition," which brings together world-renowned masters of calligraphy for the first time, has come to Istanbul.Speaking about the exhibition held by the Küçükçekmece Municipality at the Sefaköy Culture and Art Center, art consultant Erhan Olcay said that works by 36 local and foreign artists will be on display."It would probably be incorrect to call it just 'calligraphy.' We called it 'calligraphy and writing culture.' Everyone in the area of Latin calligraphy in Turkey took part in this exhibition," Olcay said, stressing that they have opened a calligraphy exhibition for the first time.Olcay noted that they will be holding workshops on material knowledge and techniques for four days."I will give the training. Similar activities were previously held at Anadolu University and Sabancı University," Olcay said, suggesting that since the event contains only calligraphy, it could be defined as one of the most extensive calligraphy exhibitions in the world.Olcay also mentioned that he prepared a leather-bound book, which consists of 17 works and can be described as a calligraphy catalog, as part of the exhibition.İslam Seçen, the master behind the book's cover design, said that he started to study art in 1952, and that he was a student of the accomplished calligrapher and book cover artist Emin Barın.Underlining that he was educated on writing and Ottoman book covers, Seçen said that he wrote the famous poem, "I am listening to Istanbul with my eyes closed" by Orhan Veli, in his work displayed in the exhibition. The exhibition, which brings together world-renowned masters of calligraphy for the first time in Istanbul, displays 70 works by 36 local and foreign artists and will be open until April 20."I also like the works of the new generation of artists. It has been 65 years since we started, but each era has different beauties. I am 82 years old, but we are still running around. We go to exhibitions, I give lectures on writing and book covers at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University, and I am still writing articles," Seçen said.Tolga Girgin, a young artist who has two works at the exhibition, said that he wrote one of his works in English."This piece tells the philosophy of Yunus Emre. It was included in the 'Anatolian Calligraphy and Typography' exhibition last year. I have recently conducted a project called 'Istanbul, My Eyes Closed'," Girgin said, informing that it was made with a brush pen and a ruling pen (drawing pen) on textured watercolor paper. "We are also inspired by the works of the masters here. We continue our works by taking them as inspiration."The "Material Techniques and Usage Information" workshop will start tomorrow and continue for four days. The exhibition, which will be open until April 20, includes 70 works by 36 local and foreign artists, including Hermann Zapf, Denis Brown, Yukimi Annand, Gemma Black, James Fazz Farrell, Betina Naab, Emin Barın, Etem Çalışkan and Yılmaz Özbek.
