Youssef Tabti, an artist of French and Algerian descent, opened an exhibition titled, "Başakşehir: Pyschogeographic Discoveries" at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts Faculty on Monday that will run until the end of the month, centered on psychogeography which deals with the impact of the geographical environment on perceptions, psychological experiences and attitudes.Youssef Tabti's project "Başakşehir: Physchogeographic Discoveries" was completed under the scope of the "City and Art" course with students from the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts Faculty's Department of Urban and Regional Planning. It is an installation project that includes audio and visual mapping and pictures that document the surroundings of psychogeographic routes in the Istanbul district of Başakşehir that were examined by students. The exhibition is the second project by Tabti, who previously held an event called "Petrzalka" in many countries. The installation works of the artist are not limited to descriptions of an urban discovery but also utilize multiple means of communication such as film, photography, voice and cartography, aiming to create a simultaneity effect on viewers.Psychogeographic research stands at the juncture of art, architecture, geography and psychology. The term was developed by "Situationist International," an international organization of social revolutionaries made up of avant-garde artists, intellectuals, and political theorists, between 1957 and 1972.Tabti focuses on social developments in art projects he has conducted in cooperation with artists from various fields. Born in Paris in 1968, Tabti studied fine arts and art history and has been living in Hamburg since 1996. Tabti benefits from different means of communication and his multicultural roots are reflected in his works that cover installation, video, photography, writing and performative actions. Tabti approaches the processes of social change that took place due to post-colonialism and similar influential factors from a critical perspective in his works which utilize mapping, documenting and archiving techniques. Tabti has already held more than 70 exhibitions in more than 20 countries worldwide, including the 2007 Istanbul Biennial, the Grand Palais Paris Triennial in 2009 and Murcia Manifesta 8 / Paralell Events in 2010. Tabti is in Istanbul as a scholarship holder of the Tarabya Culture Academy.
