Chess museum holds quilling workshop for Dad's perfect gift

Children will be introduced to the art of quilling at Gökyay Foundation Chess Museum this weekend. The first Chess Museum workshop will be held on Saturday as part of the Ankara venue's Father's Day events.

During the workshop, youngsters will demonstrate their designer creativity with colorful paper. The workshops will kick off on Saturday, June 17, between 2 and 3:30 p.m. with the "My Goalkeeper is My Dad" event, where children will learn the art of quilling and have fun designing gifts for Father's Day.

With their colorful and unique programs, Ankara's Chess Museum is now bringing families together through quilling. Throughout the year, the Chess Museum has hosted concerts, seminars, training workshops, talks and chats. Now, they are organizing something that has never been done before during the summer season. Quilling experts Serpil Diri and Hakan Diri will help parents and their children at the Chess Museum to create the perfect gifts for Father's Day. The workshops will be held for groups of children between the ages of 5-7 and 7-12.

Pieces in different forms

Speaking about the quilling event, Gökyay Foundation Chess Museum manager Binnur Uçakhan noted that they have attracted significant attention through their extraordinary culture and arts events throughout the year, and that for the summer season, they will kick off their workshops with a design event. According to Uçakhan, chess pieces will be introduced in unique forms during some of the design workshops, and with Father's Day on June 18, they will also be introducing families to quilling to help expand their creative horizons. "As you know, the rook moves left and right and up and down. It takes down its competitors on this course. Just like our fathers who protect us from all the troubles that come up in our lives and, sometimes with one move, they can raise us up if we stumble in life. At the Chess Museum Design Workshop, children will prepare cards or small gifts for their fathers for Father's Day," said Uçakhan, adding that they will be encouraging inter-family communication with this event as well. During the workshop, the children will be improving their motor skills, expanding their creativity and have an overall great day. Uçakhan also mentioned that chess-themed jewelry and souvenir design workshops for adults will soon be opening at the museum.

What is Quilling?

Quilling is a craft utilizing narrow strips of paper that are curled with special tools. With the invention of paper in the 15th century, the narrow strips from book covers in France and Italy were often used for preparing panels.

This activity is especially beneficial for children. Through this craft, they are able to hone their concentration, creativity and motor skills, while exploring new and different ways to use paper materials.
