The head of the al-Qaeda terrorist network in Pakistan was killed this week by security forces, a senior Pakistani official said Wednesday.Acting on a tip-off, police commandoes on Monday killed four militants while carrying out a raid at an house under-construction in the Sheikhupura district of the eastern province of Punjab.Punjab Home Minister Shuja Khanzada told media in the provincial capital Lahore that one of those killed was identified as the al-Qaeda chief for Pakistan who also controlled the terrorist group's network in the largest province of Punjab. "He was known as Abdali and was a Pakistani national," the minister said.Police also arrested two injured militants and recovered three suicide jackets, one rocket launcher and five AK-47 rifles from the rebel's hideout, said Khanzada.Last June, the Pakistan army launched a massive military operation in North Waziristan tribal region, considered a stronghold of al-Qaeda-linked militants.The army claims to have cleared more than 90 per cent of the district, killing more than 2,800 militants, but officials believe that the threat of militancy is not over.
