Auto exporters face tough competition as sector heats up
The race for leadership between automotive exporters is heating up as giants Tofaş, Ford Otosan, Oyak Renault and Toyota compete for the title of number-one exporter in the automotive sector.
Automotive exporters got off to a running start in 2017 and the race for leadership among the automotive giants that exported 82 out of every 100 vehicles in the first two months of the year has been rather fierce. The fact that the sector leader changes every month indicates that competition has and will continue to be tough for the remainder of the year. Ford Otosan, who was sitting in the leader's seat with 22,926 units in January 2017, fell to third place despite the fact that it doubled its exports to 45,982 in February.
Tofaş, which ranked fourth in January with 19,788, has taken the lead with 49,283 units in February. Toyota, who ranked third in the highest number of exports in January with 22,122, fell to fourth place with 41,401 units in the second month of the year.
On the other hand, Hyundai Assan, which doubled its exports from 15,119 units in January to 32,224 in February, ranked fifth on the list. In 2016, Tofaş held the title for the highest number of exports with 279,444 pieces, followed by Oyak Renault with 270,088 units and Ford Otosan with 256,706 units. In 2015, Oyak Renault became the leader of exports with 270,299 pieces.
Starting the year with high figures, the automotive industry exported 82 percent of the total production in the first two months of 2017. Exports increased by 31 percent to 219,000 units compared to the previous year. The automotive industry, which exported 77 vehicles out of every 100 vehicles produced in 2016, exceeded 1 million in exports for the first time, hitting 1.141 million units, an increase of 15 percent. By the end of 2017, exports are expected to break new records in quantity.
Additionally, the steady growth of the automotive market in Europe has also reflected positively on exports in the Turkish automotive industry. Automobile sales in EU member states rose by 6.1 percent to 2.317 million in the first two months of the year.
