Turks prefer spending holidays with relatives
Sixty percent of holiday-makers in Turkey during the summer months visit their relatives and therefore stay at their relatives' houses instead of hotels or B&Bs. According to the Household Local Tourism statistics of the Turkish Statistics Institution, 60.3 percent of people going on summer holiday between July and September visit their relatives. The second reason for taking a holiday is "traveling, tourism, fun," followed by 5.3 percent of people who travel for health reasons. 198.3 million people who have taken a holiday in this quarter have preferred to stay at "relatives or friends" overnight, followed by 68.6 million staying overnight at "their own houses," while 15.3 million people preferred staying at "hotels." 22 million people have taken a holiday in the third quarter, which is considered a holiday season in Turkey, and the number of overnight stays for one or more nights has increased by 7.1 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 28.3 million. Holiday-makers' overnight stays were around 307.5 million, and the average overnight stay was for 10.9 nights, with the average spending for a holiday around TL 377. The total travel expenditures of holiday-makers in the third quarter of 2014 increased by 30.7 percent, reaching TL 10.7 billion.TL 10.2 billion out of total travel expenditure, that is, 95.2 percent were spent on personal holidays, while 4.8 percent, equaling to TL 518 million was spent on package tours. In 2013, 65.6 percent of holiday-makers visited their "relatives" followed by 20.1 percent taking a holiday for "traveling, tourism, fun" and 7.8 percent had taken a holiday for health reasons.
