While Turkey's unemployment rate in January was 11.3 percent, some sectors are experiencing trouble finding employees to hire. May 1 marked the official beginning of the construction of one of Turkey's mega projects, Istanbul's third airport, which aims to be completed by 2017. However, the consortium is facing a major obstacle: Finding staff. A vacancy announcement, which was also recently mentioned by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, aims to recruit earth-moving truck drivers, work truck operators and bulldozer, grader, loader and excavator operators for the construction work. The situation is viewed as yet more proof of the Turkish education system's inability to properly prepare and train intermediate staff. According to a tweet posted by Mustafa Varank, a senior adviser to Erdoğan, merely 81 people applied to multiple job postings that were recently published in 13 newspapers. Describing the situation as a reality of Turkey in his tweet, Varank said although the jobs were published in the papers, 81 people applied with 65 of the applicants being employed. He added there are still hundreds of vacancies available.
