British musicians post record global album sales

British artists sold 14 percent of albums worldwide last year, pushing revenue for the British recorded music industry to $2.75 billion, an industry group said on Thursday. One Direction, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Pink Floyd and Sam Smith were the top-selling British album artists, making Britain's market share the highest for five years, according to the British Phonographic Industry's (BPI) Music Market 2015 data. "Music is a tremendous export success story for the U.K.," said Geoff Taylor, BPI's chief executive. British artists' share of domestic album sales hit a 17-year high of 54 percent, with local artists making up the entire top 10 of BPI's annual British album chart for the first time. British albums accounted for 12 percent of U.S. sales, 15 percent in Canada, 22 percent in Australia, 20 percent in Italy, 14 percent in Germany, and 12 percent in France.
