Online retailer Amazon has removed doormats featuring religious images, including pictures of the Quran and Mecca's Kabaa, from sale.

By Monday, mats featuring pictures of Hindu gods and Jesus Christ had been removed from the website following calls on social media to boycott Amazon, which is the world's largest e-retailer.

One producer, Rock Bull, was still selling mats, along with mousepads and cellphone covers, with images of mosques. These mats, which are being sold from $23,99, feature images of Istanbul landmarks of Hagia Sophia and Sultan Ahmet mosques.

Founded in 1994 by only selling books, Amazon is one of the world's first online retailers and serves as a sale platform for various smaller firms. The net worth of the company exceeds $100 billion.
