U.S.-based consumer goods producer Procter & Gamble (P&G) announced a 250 million lira ($70 million) investment for baby and feminine care products in its factory in Gebze, nortwestern Turkey, to mark its 30th anniversary of entering the Turkish market.
As part of the investment, P&G Turkey will be producing 90 pervent of the products from the Prima (Known as 'Pampers' in the U.S.) and Orkid (Known as 'Always' in the U.S.) brands in its Gebze factory.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Tankut Turnaoğlu, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of P&G Turkey and Caucasus, said that 60 percent of products P&G sells in Turkey are made locally and that this investment aims to increase domestic production in the country.
Pointing out that as P&G Turkey they have blazed a trail in many fields, Turnaoğlu said "We launched Orkid Platinum products with micro cushion technology for the first time in Turkey, [before anywhere else in the world], and we have started the localization process of these products in our Gebze factory."
Reminding that the mass production of Prima Active Baby products first started in their Gebze factory in all of Europe, Turnaoğlu announced that the Prima Premium Care line would start to be locally produced in Turkey starting from April.
Underscoring that they provided direct and indirect employment to 2,500 people with the 'business ecosystem' they created in Turkey, the chairman said that P&G sees women's employment as a reflection of its 'responsible and ethical investor' outlook and makes sure that women are successfully represented at every level, including leadership positions.
"Today more than 50 percent of our employees are women," Turnaoğlu added.
P&G's global chief David Taylor said that some high-tech production methods have also been brought to Turkey as part of the investment.
Taylor also underlined that new legislative measures such as the intellectual property law have made it easier for companies to make investments in Turkey.
P&G currently has two factories in Turkey, and with its latest initiative, it has made a total of 2 billion liras worth of investments in the country, since it entered the Turkish market some 30 years ago.
The company exports 20 percent of its production in Turkey to more than 10 countries in Central Asia, the Middle East and the Balkans.
P&G operates with 18 brands in the field of personal care and hygiene in Turkey, including Head & Shoulders, Oral-B, Gillette and Pampers.
