People in Turkey will soon be able to use public transportation across the country using a universal electronic ticket, a report said Monday.

The innovation is expected to be introduced within the 'National Smart Transportation System' project run by the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, according to Yeni Şafak daily.

Turkey's general public transport payment system will be centralized to enable people to use their special smart cards issued on a name basis to pay transit fares in all cities throughout the country.

The card will be usable on all modes of transportation, including, but not limited to, buses, metro, tramways, ferries and metrobuses.

The report added that a domestically-developed software will be used for the new system.

Most of the Turkish cities currently use local integrated electronic ticket systems.
