The government has acted to make Turkish cinema a trademark in the sector. In 2017, a total of 32.4 million was provided for 30 feature-length films, 71 documentary films, 45 scenarios, 34 short films and 10 animated films.

Government support for Turkish cinema, which rises to the second place after the U.S. with TV series exports and returns with awards from world film festivals, continues. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which supported the first films of new generation directors with cinema funding, broke a record for the support of new projects for veteran filmmakers. In 2017, the Supporting Board consisting of sector representatives specialized in their fields, provided a total of TL 33 million ($8.5 million) for directors and screenwriters in areas such as feature films, documentaries, scriptwriting and short films.

According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in 2017, TL 25.6 million was provided for 30 feature-length films, followed by TL 5 million for 71 documentary projects, TL 544,000 for 45 scriptwriting projects, TL 456,000 for 34 short film projects, and TL 236,000 for 10 animated film projects. With an additional TL 255,000 support for six research and development projects, the total amount of support given stood at TL 32.4 million. In addition, TL 22.8 million was also provided for 101 art-related activities in the field of cinema, with 27 international and 74 domestic events.

The Ministry has also decided to conduct a study on the accessibility of cinema for people with disabilities. In this context, different versions of films supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, including voice descriptions, sign language and detailed subtitles, were submitted to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism by filmmakers.

With the support provided by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in the first 43 weeks of 2017, 121 new domestic films were presented to viewers, while the total number of viewers exceeded 53.5 million. Compared to the same period last year, the all-time viewer record was broken with an increase of 20 percent in the number of viewers. Turkey ranks first in Europe with a domestic viewing rate of 48 percent. Turkey has become the second country exporting the largest number of films after the U.S. in 2017 with TV series exports to 142 countries.
