Havelsan, a leading Turkish defense and technology company developing software-based solutions, has added a new product to its portfolio of AI-focused offerings, according to a report on Sunday.
The company has designed a domestic platform named ORION, able to bring together and manage data via a single space.
It is a scalable big-data management platform that brings organizations' fragmented data together on a single platform, manages data securely, accelerates analysis and reporting processes, and prepares data for artificial intelligence applications.
The platform thus enables organizations to collect, store, process and analyze large amounts of data located across different systems through a single platform.
By making both structured and unstructured data owned by organizations more accessible, manageable, usable and ready for analysis, it aims to significantly improve data-driven decision-making processes.
Built on open-source components, ORION aims to enable organizations to manage all of their big-data processes from a single platform.
Organizations continuously generate data in different formats and structures through dozens of digital systems, including databases, enterprise applications, documents, sensors, security equipment, manufacturing machines and similar sources. However, because this data is often stored in separate environments, it cannot always be used in an integrated manner, and analysis and reporting processes can take a long time.
ORION brings together data from these different sources under a common structure, enabling organizations to make faster and more effective use of their data.
The platform focuses not only on storing data but also on preparing it for use. Data collected from different sources can be organized, processed, searched and analyzed through ORION.
As a result, users can access the information they need more quickly and conduct reporting, research, analysis and decision-support processes more efficiently.
ORION can be used by public institutions and private-sector organizations that generate large amounts of data or want to manage data from different systems within a common structure, according to an Anadolu Agency (AA) report.
The platform can thus provide value across a range of sectors, including government, defense, finance, energy, telecommunications, transportation, health care, industry and research.
Moreover, it can be configured to scale according to an organization’s requirements, data volume and number of users, allowing both horizontal and vertical expansion.
Data sovereignty, 'on-premises first' approach
One of ORION’s key features is its ability to work alongside organizations' existing systems.
The platform can be integrated with the data sources and applications organizations already use, helping protect their existing investments. This is also an important factor in facilitating migration to the platform.
ORION can be deployed in organizations’ own data centers and closed networks. This supports keeping data within the organization’s boundaries, controlling access permissions, and preserving institutional ownership of critical data.
The general approach of platforms offering similar big-data services lies upon the fact that almost most of all the widely used ones are provided by foreign companies and they store data in third-party cloud environments rather than on the organization’s own server infrastructure.
This is considered a situation that can put data sovereignty at risk.
ORION differs in this respect through its "on-premises first” approach.
ORION provides the foundation for AI and advanced analytics initiatives. For AI applications to produce reliable results, data needs to be organized, accessible, and processable.
ORION comes into play by ensuring that data flows into the AI layer in an organized, accurate and up-to-date form.

Moreover, ORION will also be used in a digitalization project to be carried out jointly by the Turkish Language Association (TDK) and Havelsan, with the aim of transferring the entire written, spoken, and visual heritage of the Turkish language from the past to the present into digital form and analyzing it using AI.
Through this project, all texts and oral sources produced since the emergence of the Turkish language will be transferred into a database.
